Capetonian Wins Two Oceans for 1st Time in 44 Years PHOTOS

Lungile Gongqa became the first Capetonian to win the annual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon in 44 years, racing to victory in the Mother City on Saturday in a time of 03:09:43.

It was an exciting close call between the South African and Warinyane Lebopo, from Lesotho, in the last few kilometres of the 56 km race.

In third place was Teboho Sello, also from Lesotho.

Maryna Damantsevich, from Belarus, raced to victory in the women’s race in a time of 03:37:13.

Over 11,000 athletes competed in the famous ultra-marathon… of whom 7,782 were men and 3,218 were women. It was the first time doing the race for 4,005 entrants.

The half-marathon attracted a further 16,000 participants of whom the majority were women – 8,754, and the rest were men.

 

 

The Two Oceans touts itself as “the world’s most beautiful marathon”… and brings tourism from around the country and the world. Last year the race was responsible for at least R672-million coming into the City of Cape Town and Western Cape Region.
