Cape Town has been selected as the Global Earth Hour Capital in recognition of the city’s efforts to address climate change.
This title is awarded as part of the global Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC) which is a joint effort between WWF and ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability), and aims to highlight and reward cities that are prepared to make substantial long-term efforts to combat climate change.
When Cape Town was shortlisted as one of the 33 finalist cities in the world, WWF South Africa CEO Morné du Plessis said: “We are exceptionally proud of Cape Town’s contribution to building a sustainable future that both protects the environment and improves the lives of citizens of South Africa.”
There were 163 entrants from 14 competing countries. Six of the entrants were South African.
Cape Town was awarded the title Global Earth Hour City at a ceremony in Vancouver, Canada, last night.
WWF’s Earth Hour is tomorrow night – Saturday 29 March 2014 – between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm local time (so wherever you are!).
This will be the seventh annual Earth Hour, which has gained popularity over the years with millions of people around the world now switching off their lights for an hour to symbolically show their commitment to doing something positive for our planet.
The WWF is calling on people this year to ask themselves: “how do I honour the Earth?”.
