Calling All Wannabe Volunteer Firefighters. VWS Is Recruiting.

Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) are currently recruiting firefighters, drivers, event managers, fund raisers and critical support personnel… so if you always read the headlines about fires in the Western Cape of South Africa, and wish you could be part of the solution, now’s your chance.

Western Cape photographer, Justin Sullivan, who has been in the thick of the action during many fires that have raged across the region, says: “One of the most rewarding experiences in the world is volunteering for a worthy cause.”

He does caution though that “as glamorous and exciting as the photos may look, being a volunteer is tough work whether you are on the fire line or working behind the scenes.”

But it’s worth it.

“As a volunteer you will not only learn about firefighting techniques, environmental conservation and the importance of team work – you will act as a fire champion to those around you, driving awareness and education on wildfires in South Africa,” says Justin.

You need to be at least 18, medically fit, have regular email and cellphone access and reliable transport to one of VWS’ bases in the Western Cape.
