Lots of countries around the world are upping their flights to South Africa, but none more so it seems than the United Kingdom. British Airways (BA) had barely announced it would begin three weekly flights from Gatwick to Cape Town when it said it would add more flights from London over the summer as well as new flights to Johannesburg.
Over the busiest periods, there will be 19 flights to Cape Town weekly and 10 to Johannesburg, according to news reports this week.
In March BA said that from November it would add three flights from Gatwick a week to Cape Town for the summer, and this week, according to news reports, it said it would add two more daily flights from Heathrow.
“The capacity increase is in response to demand on the route, which in no small part is due to the excellent job that’s being done to market Cape Town and position it as a top international leisure destination,” Edward Frost, BA’s commercial manager for South and East Africa was quoted saying.
Over the most concentrated period, there will reportedly be 16 weekly Boeing 747-400 flights from Healthrow and three Boeing 777-400 from Gatwick to Cape Town. From October, BA will apparently also increase its Joburg service to 10 flights a week, with the A380 replacing some of the existing Boeing 747-400 services.
