TV soap stars from ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’, who are currently on a promo trip to South Africa, have removed photos they had shared of themselves petting lion cubs and other bred captive animals.
Animal conservationists had been shocked by the photos which showed the stars – Heather Tom, Karla Mosley and Jacob Young – had been taken to the Lion Park outside Johannesburg, where they had held lion cubs and stroked cheetah…
These are activities that many local and international visitors enjoy, thinking it’s “cute”, unaware that once that lion is too old to be cute it is usually destined to be sold to a game farm where it will be killed by hunters in a practice known as ‘Canned Hunting’ and exposed in documentary Blood Lions.
Animal activist Paul Tully set up a petition imploring CBS and the stars to remove the photos from social media and help raise awareness around the world that most animals in South African petting programmes are not orphans… but have been deliberately bred, and snatched from their mother at around two-weeks of age.
SAPeople contacted African Star Communications, the PR and event management company which allegedly took the stars to the Lion Park… but they have not responded.
However the images have been removed from social media. (Although ironically mainstream media in South Africa have published the photos, showing how many people are still unaware of what Tully calls “unethical practices”).
Tully urged CBS to “act responsibly” and ensure these activities aren’t promoted, and that they help other tourists avoid such activities. Fortunately it looks like his petition is working!
