The Springbok Sevens may not have won the rugby sevens tournament in Vancouver over the weekend… but they won hearts, and made South Africans proud! Local Canadian media has reported the awesome good deed they performed on their way to the first day of matches, when they saw two women who had broken down on the side of the road…

Even though they had important games to get to, the Springbok Sevens pulled over to assist… proving they truly are ‘Pioneers of Greatness’ as is emblazoned on their rugby jerseys.

“How do you change a flat tyre if you live the City of Vancouver?” the Blitzboks asked on Twitter, when they uploaded a video of the incident… and then answered: “Easy, ask the Blitzboks!”

Sevens captain Philip Snyman told reporters they were happy to help.

“We always want to do things on the field right, but it also starts off the field. That’s exactly what our team stands for. Our culture means touching people’s lives.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s your own country or your own family, we want to put a smile on everybody’s faces and that makes us happy.”

Branco du Preez agreed, saying “it was a true team effort” (as can be witnessed in the videos below).

The rescued ‘damsels in distress’ had no idea they were being helped by world champions, until somebody told them.

One Canadian citizen, Joanne Hetherington, wrote on Facebook: “As a Vancouver Lady, welcome to my city and Thank You for stopping to help out my Canadian sisters. You are true gentlemen and champions.“

Unfortunately the Blitzboks lost 7-19 in the final in Vancouver to England , the only side to have beaten the Blitzboks this year… in Cape Town, Wellington and now in Vancouver.

“It does seem that we have a problem against England. We will have to go and look how and where to do things better when we face them,” coach Neil Powell admitted.

The team also suffered on the injury front, and Powell says this could impact on the experience factor when they travel to the next two tournaments, in Hong Kong and Singapore next month.

“We still need to do medicals, but it seems that we will lose a number of players and might need to travel to Hong Kong with a much younger squad. We have some hard work ahead of us,” Powell said.

The Blitzboks arrive in Cape Town Wednesday morning.

The Hong Kong tournament starts on 7 April.
