You never know what you’re going to find up one of the alleys in Kalk Bay, a gem on the False Bay side of Cape Town, and it just makes you want to explore. So says one of the locals interviewed by musician Arno Carstens in a recent video about the artist-town-meets-fishing-village.
The video gives you a good taste of the villagey suburb:
In the video, made by Cape Town Tourism to publicise some of its diverse suburbs, from Woodstock all the way out to False Bay, Carstens wanders through some of the shops that make Kalk Bay the perfect place for a day trip.
There are galleries aplenty, antique stores, cafes and restaurants like Cape to Cuba – where the Simonstown train whizzes right by the window – as well as the famous and very photographed small harbour (where freed slaves came to ply their trade, says one of the fishermen Carstens interviews). Just this week, two of Kalk Bay’s most famous restaurants – Harbour House and the Brass Bell – made headlines when they survived super storms following Sunday night’s super moon.
While the video offers several of the options of things to do, Kalk Bay has many more, including the incredible Artvark gallery – always replete with the latest finds from all over Africa – as well as the must-have-a-croissant-and-coffee-there Olympia Cafe.
