“Nomvula” is a very chill, very catchy Xhosa song by up-and-coming singer Nathi – he’s been called “a breath of fresh acoustic air” – in a gorgeous video shot around his home province of the Eastern Cape.
The song is from his debut album, “Buyelekhaya”, and has already been viewed over 300,000 times on YouTube in less than a month.
“I am a boy from the Eastern Cape and was born in uMthatha,” Nathi told a reporter recently. “I studied in Maclear which is six kilometres from uMthatha. I loved music and drawing from a very early age.”
He did the drawings for the cover of “Buyelekhaya”.
“I started music and drawing in school and when the other kids were playing I would find myself singing or drawing. I just discovered that this was a calling. I had to do both.”
Nathi won a talent competition that was promoted by the Elundini Municipality, and was part of a venture to nurture talent in the Port Elizabeth area.
“I wrote all the songs from a personal place. All of the songs are about the love that I have experienced over the years and I am just sharing that with the world,” he says.
