Congratulations to Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis who has been named the African Women’s Coach of the Year again.
Ellis has proved herself again to be a coach extraordinaire! In January 2019 the formidable South African coach was named the CAF Women’s National Team Coach of the Year 2018, and during 2018 Ellis made history when she became the first person to win the COSAFA Women’s Championship as both player and coach.
As a former player and captain, Ellis understands her team. When South Africa played its first women’s international after readmission to global football in 1993, the country was captained by the diminutive midfielder.
Ellis has succeeded where many before her failed, coaching South Africa on the game’s greatest stage for the World Cup after decades of qualification heartbreak.
She’s renowned as a coach who works tirelessly on planning and preparation.
The Special CAF Award 2019 was given to Kodjovi Obilale, a former Togo goalkeeper who was injured in a terrorist attack on the team’s bus in 2010.
