Banyana Banyana marched through to the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a game to spare as they comfortably beat Burundi in a Group C encounter at the Complexe Sportif Prince Heritier Moulay Al Hassan on Thursday night.
The Sasol-sponsored team have put in a stellar performance – beating Nigeria 2-1 on Monday and Burundi 3-1 on Thursday.
The South African senior women’s national team could have won this match by an even higher margin, since they created a number of gilt-edged chances, but the Sasol-sponsored players still emerged with a decent 3-1 win!
Thembi Kgatlana was the first to get the South Africans on the stadium scoreboard when she scored the opening goal of the match in the 20th minute. But Banyana Banyana took their foot off the pedal and Burundi clawed their way back with an equalizer courtesy of Aniella Awimana 10 minutes later.
Within two minutes Amogelang Motau restored Banyana Banyana’s lead during a frenzied first half.
Coach Desiree Ellis’ charges finally got the goal they needed to make the game safe when Linda Motlhalo converted from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute after Thembi Kgatlana was brought down inside the area. – Safa.net
