This comes following their 2-0 win over Mali tonight in the AWCON 2018 semi-finals in Ghana.
Banyana Banyana tweeted after the match: “It’s all over! Mission accomplished! @Banyana_Banyana is going to the @FIFAWWC for the 1st time ever. History in the making…”
SAFA (South African Football Association) issued a statement expressing its absolute pride in the team’s achievement – qualifying for the first time for a World Cup Final tournament… the FiFA Women’s World Cup France 2019!
Interestingly Banyana Banyana’s qualification for the World Cup comes exactly 20 years after Bafana Bafana (the men’s national football team) played their first World Cup… and that too was in France.
SAFA Acting CEO Russell Paul said: “On behalf of the President, SAFA Council and membership at large, we want to congratulate the team! All your hard work, commitment and patience over the past year has finally paid off!
“To the Head of Delegation, Coach, technical and support staff and above all the players – we are indeed proud of your achievement tonight and urge you to remain focused on your next objective – and that is to claim the title of AFRICAN Champions 2018!”
He also thanked Sasol for their support of the team and women’s football in South Africa, and said: “Thank you for being the fuel that has allowed this team to drive forward with success!”
