Despite fake stories started by a satirical news site, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is very much alive… and is today celebrating the launch of his new book – co-authored with the Dalai Lama – whilst recuperating from an infection in hospital.
His daughter Mpho said the fake stories about the 84-year-old were “very disturbing and incredibly unkind to not only the family, but to people around the world who really do love and care” for Tutu.
The malicious rumours were started by a fake news site that mentions under a disclaimer that its articles are fiction and untrue.
Mpho said her dad was healing well and that doctors are “very pleased with his progress”, and he should be home againsoon. Tutu had returned to hospital over the weekend after his wife Leah noticed an infection, just days after leaving following surgery for a recurring infection (which was reportedly caused by treatment he had received for prostate cancer).
Mpho said her father was “more like himself than he has been”.
One of his visitors was South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa. In a tweet on Tuesday, Tutu said: “A joy to be joined for Eucharist Service today by Deputy President Ramaphosa. I told him he looked beautiful considering his difficult job.”
Mpho said her father was in very good spirits and “much more like himself than he has been”.
‘The Book of Joy’, which has been released today by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, was the result of the two spiritual friends getting together in Dharamsala for the Dalai Lama’s birthday, and discussing the challenges of living a joyful life.
Both are winners of the Nobel Prize, both in their 80s, and both renowned for being incredibly infectious happy people.
Their book is a “three-layer birthday cake”, according to the website – and includes their own stories, scientific findings about happiness, and their daily practices to anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives.
Their core message is that “to have joy yourself, you must bring joy to others.”
