South Africa’s political parties are clearly coming out fighting in preparation for the 3 August local government elections, with the ANC creating new Facebook and Twitter pages with a smiling white dude and the Democratic Alliance’s Helen Zille trying (probably not too seriously) to get popular black DJ Fresh to change the name on his Twitter page from Dawg to “DA-wg” until voting day.
The ANC added the new picture to its Facebook and Twitter pages probably to promote voter registration last weekend, although at the same time it changed its Twitter handle from @MyANC_ to @MYANC. News reports several days ago quoted the ANC saying that someone had hacked its @MyANC_ page, although it has since been removed.
In a statement last week, ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa said, “It has come to our attention that some mischievous characters have created a new Twitter account using our previous account handle (@MyANC_). Our new handle, as from yesterday, 8 April 2016, is @MYANC (without underscore).”
Western Province premier Zille, meanwhile, asked popular DJ Fresh, aka Big Dawg on Twitter, to change his name to Big DA-wg till 3 August. See below for his noncommittal response.
The ANC is to launch its local government election manifesto this weekend in Nelson Mandela Bay, a hotly contested seat that they DA has its sights on winning.
