AA Commends Hero Truck Driver Who Rescued Woman on Witkoppen Road, South Africa

Sjoe. This is the South Africa we love. On Monday night a South African driver, Michelle Vorster, ran out of petrol on Witkoppen Road in Joburg, Gauteng (“because I’m an idiot like that”). Nobody stopped. It was getting darker. And then like a knight in shining armour, a truck driver wearing an AA uniform appeared on the horizon and towed her car – for free – to a petrol station.
Michelle was elated and shared her joy on Facebook, saying “let’s make this amazing man famous”.
Michelle explained that after her car got stuck:
Nobody stopped to ask if I was ok, in fact, some people were hooting at me although I had my hazards on. And then a tow truck came as if sent from heaven and stopped to ask if I was ok. I told him I had run out of petrol and he offered to tow me to the nearest garage at no charge.
When I got into the tow truck he told me he couldn’t just leave me there because I am a woman alone. By the time he got to me, I had started getting a bit panicky and concerned that someone was gonna drive into me but he was so lovely and took total control.
Once we got to the petrol station he waited to make sure my car started.
Thank u kind sir, I am forever grateful for your act of kindness. U have restored my faith in humanity.
But many who read her post were worried that the Good Samaritan – Sancky Mathebula – would get into trouble for helping her at no charge… but Michelle said Thursday morning that the AA South Africa have now commented on the post, saying:
“As the AA, we commend Mr Matshebula for living our values. We have shared this lovely post with his manager and himself.”
Calling Sancky “MY HERO”, Michelle said: “To everyone worrying that he was going to get into trouble, the AA seem to value human life, and good deeds by their staff get commended!!”
Sancky’s manager told Michelle that this isn’t the first time Sancky’s work ethic and kindness has been noticed.
“His manager says he was given an award last year for his amazing service and apparently they often receive compliments about him!!! He is not going to be in trouble for helping me at no charge and the manager was just as grateful as I am that Sancky came along and saved the day and made sure I was safe!” she said.
