67 ordinary residents of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) – who do extraordinary things within their communities – were honoured by East Coast Radio over the weekend for living Madiba’s values every day.
The 67 people, from across KZN, were nominated by radio listeners for the way in which they work tirelessly in the service of others, influences lives in a meaningful way and give 100% to make the world a better place.
Some prepare meals for disadvantaged families. Some are teachers who pack lunches for underprivileged children; others commit personal time to caring for the sick.
These 67 community champs cast the net wide every day of their lives to spread a bit of joy to those less fortunate, to give hope and to make dreams happen.
The chosen 67, of amongst hundreds of nominations, were treated to a scrumptious lunch at Durban’s Waterfront Hotel, celebrating Madiba’s values, in the company of their favourite presenters. Alexia Zuma from Impendle (pictured below) said: “I feel like a queen! Today is my turn to be treated!”
Founder of the NPO, Mega Smile Foundation, Akshi Rajbansi, who was nominated by her best friend, said: “It’s awesome to be treated when you’re normally on the other “giving” side of it.”
The onair personalities including Bongani Mtolo, Natarah Nadesan, Sky Tshabalala, Deon Govender and Nolwazi Magwaza waited on tables and served the meals!
East Coast Breakfast host Darren Maule brought the comedy and SA Idols semi-finalist Msizi James provided entertainment.
Meet some of KZN’s Heroes:

Lari Govender
Lari always gives selflessly and is heavily involved in her church in Pietermaritzburg. She also mobilises her office in charitable efforts and ensures everyone does their bit for 67 minutes on Mandela Day. Nisha Devdhat, who nominated Lari, says: “Lari also spreads love and sunshine everywhere she goes. She never says no to helping others and doing favours. She goes out of her way to make people feel loved and special on their birthdays and other occasions. She is a kind, caring, gentle and generous sweet heart. She is an inspiration.”
Alexia Zuma
Alexia is the admin manager at Melmoth Supatrade Spar. She goes out of her way, often using her own resources, to help customers and colleagues. Her infectious personality rubs off on everyone she meets, making everyone’s day brighter. “She is a true gem,” says Philisiwe Zondi who nominated her.
