A minute’s silence (and/or applause) is being held in honour of Joost van der Westhuizen, who passed away on Monday, at each of the Six Nations matches this weekend.
Six Nations organisers posted a photo Saturday afternoon to Twitter of the minute’s silence before the Ireland vs Italy match in Rome.
The message said: “A rugby legend. The great Joost van der Westhuizen will be remembered at all our matches this weekend.”
Later today in Wales, South Africans described the incredible atmosphere as a minute’s silence was held before the England vs Wales match.
Both teams and spectators stood for Joost… as they played a video clip of the former World Cup Springbok scrum-half on the large screen.
France and Scotland will pay their respects at Stade de France in Paris.
Joost died on Monday after a six-year battle with Motor Neurone Disease. He was just 45.
The Six Nations tournament comprises England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.
