2 South African Restaurants Named on World’s Best List

South Africa’s The Test Kitchen has once again been named as one of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, making it the fifth time the Cape Town restaurant has made the Top 50.

The restaurant, which came in 44th place, was also once again awarded The Best Restaurant in Africa title.

According to TheWorlds50Best.com, “this creative restaurant by Luke Dale-Roberts serves inventive interpretations of popular global dishes with a South African twist.”

The list – which includes restaurants in 26 countries – is compiled by a voting Academy of over 1,000 international chefs, food writers and traveling gastronomes.

These judges recommend The Test Kitchen’s Billionaire Porcini Shortbread, a savoury take on the classic millionaire.

“The different layers consist of a porcini shortbread base topped with a truffle jelly that is sandwiched together with a rich and smooth duck liver parfait,” The Test Kitchen’s team told the organisers of the competition.

“We spread a thin layer of 99% dark chocolate on top, and once it is set, we finish the billionaire off with a 24ct gold leaf.”

The billionaire is the first course at The Test Kitchen, while the final course is a millionaire shortbread.

This year The World’s 50 Best Restaurants extended its list of restaurants ranked to 120 (to celebrate the 120th anniversary of its main sponsor San Pellegrino), shining the spotlight on a growing number of brilliant chefs.

Acclaimed Cape Town restaurant La Colombe took the 114th spot. The restaurant is headed up by Executive Chef James Gaag, Head Chef, Jess van Dyk, and Chef-
Proprietor Scot Kirton.

Gaag said: “We are so proud of this achievement… We are delighted to be included, and the La Colombe team appreciates this notable international recognition.

“No doubt, we are definitely aiming to move up on that list in 2020… we have
some awesome inspiration for our loyal local and international diners following our recent
trip to the US and Mexico.”

The awards took place in Singapore on 25 June.

First place in the competition (which this year didn’t allow previous winners to win) went to Mirazur in Menton on the French Riviera. Their recommended meal is ‘Green’ (a dish which includes the fresh peas grown in the restaurant’s gardens)

Second place when to Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark where you should try their Grilled smoked king crab; and third place to Asador Etxebarri in Axpe, Spain… where apparently the Grilled kokotxas (fish throats!) are simply divine!
