An American travel blogger and video maker, Drew Binsky, has created a fantastic video listing the ten ways you know you’re in South Africa.

His list includes the usual suspects that are unique to South Africa like biltong and braais, but also has items like how we call chapstick or lip balm – ‘lip ice’.

Drew has already visited over 115 countries since 2012. His goal is to “spread peace, positivity and happiness, as I plan to visit every country on earth.”

The American traveller said on facebook: “I am thrilled to FINALLY be visiting South Africa, a country that was high on my bucket list for quite some time. And it’s also nice to explore a big city here (Joburg) as opposed to being in the bush scouting out at animals (which was AMAZING as well, but as you know, I am a city-guy at heart!)”

10 Ways You Know You’re in SOUTH AFRICA

  1. Rusks – “South African heaven”
  2. Special South African Lingo – howzit, ya (ja) “and the phrase ‘now now’ actually means later!”
  3. Wimpy – a leading SA fastfood restaurant that’s kind of like McDonald’s mixed with Subway … but the fries are a bit Wimpy
  4. Biltong – like beef jerky but a lot tastier
  5. Wild Animals – SA is home to more than 20 national parks
  6. Braai – used as a noun and a verb, and if you call it a barbecue they will get offended
  7. Cricket and Rugby – “the two most popular sports in South Africa brought to the country by the Brits… but as a typical American… I’m clueless about rugby and cricket… but they look like fun sports to play”.
  8. Robots – “maybe the strangest thing in this video! South Africans call traffic lights robots!”
  9. Lip Ice – “you know it’s a South African talking when they call it lip ice” instead of chapstick or lip balm
  10. Safety – “you need to check twice if you’ve locked the gate, your house, your car and closed all the windows”.
