A 12-year-old South African, living in Ireland, is making history in more ways than one. Niamh Beatrix last night (Sunday 1 October) made it into the finals of the Junior Eurovision Ireland! Watch her below.

Performing ‘Radio Active’ in Gaeilge, Niamh is the first South African to make it into the finals of the Irish leg. If voted as the overall-winner between now and the finals – which will be on 8 October – Niamh will go on to represent Ireland in France, also making her the first South African-Irish singer competing in this prestigious European event.

Niamh has asked fans to “please vote for me HOURLY between now and the finals on the 8th of October 2023 at https://bit.ly/voteniamhbeatrix Thank you for all your support – it really means something to me ❤️”

Her mother, Alda, told SAPeople: “We would just truly appreciate South Africa’s support! Whether she will be named the overall winner to represent Ireland in France will depend on how many votes she can get between tonight and the end of her final performance on the 8th. We don’t know that many people in Ireland yet, but you can vote from anywhere in the world.  Votes for Niamh can be made at https://bit.ly/voteniamhbeatrix HOURLY FROM 1 – 8 OCTOBER.”

Niamh, who is using her voice to bring people together, recently won the hearts of many when she released first an Afrikaans and then an English cover in aid of Make-a-Wish Ireland.

The Eurovision Song Contest, devised as a way to celebrate peace and cooperation between countries, first aired in 1956. It is an international television extravagance in which countries put aside – and even embrace – their difference. It is therefore very fitting that this youngster – who is using her gift to advocate for inclusion, diversity and unity – is doing well in the children’s version of the contest.

Although Niamh clearly has a deep love for Ireland, she hasn’t forgotten her South African roots. In November this year she will be releasing her first original Afrikaans single in aid of Reach-for-a-Dream South Africa.

South Africans can get behind Niamh Beatrix by voting for her at https://bit.ly/voteniamhbeatrix, hourly until 8 October, when she will perform in the finals of the Irish leg of this competition.
