It was confirmed today that legendary singer and songwriter Rodriguez will be returning to South Africa early next year. This time he will be performing in Johannesburg and Cape Town again, as well as in Durban and Port Elizabeth.
His last tour to the country was sold out within minutes of bookings being opened…so if you’re keen for a ticket, be ready at 9 am this Wednesday, 8 July 2015! Tickets will be available from Big Concerts and Computicket.
It has been thanks in large part to South Africa that Rodriguez has enjoyed a major revival in his music career – and worldwide fame – decades after he stopped performing.
Rodriguez had begun playing bars and clubs in Detroit in the ’60s and recorded two studio albums – ‘Cold Fact’ (1969) and ‘Coming from Reality’ (1971). ‘Cold Fact’ became a must-have album for many South Africans in the late ’70s and ’80s…but in his home country of the USA, Rodriguez and his music went unnoticed.
In those pre-social media days, Rodriguez had no idea that he had become a folk-rock cult hero in South Africa…and so, believing he hadn’t made it, he quit music to earn a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Wayne State University, and over the following years ran for political office (his songs always had that political anthem feel) and worked construction and factory jobs to support his family.
Back in South Africa, where Rodriguez had unknowingly achieved super stardom status, there were rumours that he had died. But nobody was sure. So in the late ’90s, a couple of South African fans decided to find out the truth.
Their journey, and subsequent discovery that Rodriguez was and is still alive, became a 2012 Oscar award-winning documentary, Searching for Sugarman. And so the legend of Rodriguez spread
And now Rodriguez is back on the road making up for all those last years.
