Although a small group of ANC supporters toy-toyed and tried to disrupt speeches by Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille, and Western Cape Premier Hellen Zille, their efforts failed miserably as the overwhelming majority of people in the crowd united to celebrate one Nation, one country!
It was Cape Town’s Table Mountain that provided “a beacon of hope” to Mandela during his many years of incarceration on Robben Island, and last night it was clear what a beacon of hope Mandela became for most Capetonians.
The crowd was entertained by Johnny Clegg, Freshlyground, Annie Lennox and Ladysmith Black Mambazo in a concert that has been hailed as one of the best ever performed at the Cape Town Stadium.
Former rugby captain Francois Pienaar’s address was warmly received by the majority, reminding the crowd of Mandela’s philosophy that sport does unite a Nation.
