A young South African expat living in Los Angeles, California, has written and produced a song with a voice that will tear at your heart and lyrics that will stir your soul, set to a backdrop of visuals highlighting the spectacular, heartbreaking beauty of South Africa.
Edward Smith – whose real name is Dewald Smit – is a singer songwriter in his 20s, who produces his own music and performs covers. He’s now based in the USA, but his heart is clearly still beating to the enticing drum of Africa. (See the proud Springbok supporter below, during the Rugby World Cup 2019.) Dewald, who’s a UCLA student studying entertainment studies – told SAPeople: “I will be back in South Africa next month. I can’t wait!”
He says on FB: “I wrote this song for South Africa, and for those hoping for a better future. Please share this song with your friends and family. God bless!”
This video is focused on a song called ‘My Home’, and is “dedicated to all South Africans during the current tough times our country is going through”. (It’s touching hearts around the globe though – a YouTube user from India said: “❤️ from India, THIS TRACK TOUCHED THE SOUL ! ?”
Lyrics include: “I wanna be free sometimes / I need to be safe here in your arms / Walk through the streets and ask why / I had to let you go / This is where I grew up / It’s the only place I know / It might be hard to see / But this… this is my home.”
You can download the song here. See the full lyrics beneath the video.

LYRICS for ‘MY HOME’ by EDWARD SMITH
You take this life away
Make me feel like I’m not at home
Push me out the way
Make it feel like we don’t belong… at all
Sometime it’s hard to say
‘Cause we got nowhere else to go
No left, no right
Guess we hit the end of the road
I know, I know
It could be hard times
It could be hard lives yeah
I know it’s tough… to let go
I wanna be free sometimes
I need to be safe here in your arms
Walk through the streets and ask why
I had to let you go
This is where I grew up
It’s the only place I know
It might be hard to see
But this… this is my home
Pushed the other way
Left to wonder around on our own
Hope to see the day
That we make this work for all of us
Somethings are hard to change
When we stuck doing what we know
No left, no right
Sometimes you have to go back to move on
I know, I know
It could be hard times
It could be hard lives yeah
I know it’s tough… to let go
I wanna be free sometimes
I need to be safe here in your arms
Walk through the streets and ask why
I had to let you go
This is where I grew up
It’s the only place I know
It might be hard to see
But this… this is my home
Yeah, Yeah… This is my home
This is my Home
Yeah, Yeah… This is my home
‘Cause I wanna be free sometimes
I need to be safe here in your arms
Walk through the streets and ask why
I had to let you go
This is where I grew up
It’s the only place I know
It might be hard to see
But this… this is my home
