Ruben Östlund’s satirical drama comedy, Triangle of Sadness, had its MENA Premiere 2nd of December at the Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The film, starring late South African actress Charlbi Dean, is screening as part of the International Spectacular program of the RSIFF. In three acts the film dives deep into issues of wealth inequality, status, beauty and power. Triangle of Sadness was awarded the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival 2022.

The first act consists primarily of a young couple, ‘Carl and Yaya’ with Charlbi Dean playing the influencer girlfriend, Yaya, lukewarmly dating a less successful model boyfriend, Carl, played by Harris Dickinson. Their conversations unveil the socially constructed roles of money and gender in relationships.
The second act, ‘The Yacht’ takes place on a luxury cruise ship where the audience is privy to all sorts of unreasonable demands from the ultra wealthy including one request to clean the sails despite there being no sails on the motorised yacht.

Things take a catastrophic turn in the third act, entitled ‘The Island’, with a handful of passengers washing ashore on a seemingly deserted island. A lower level member of the ship becomes the essential figurehead for the survival of the group. Her ascent in social status and hierarchy to “captain” is swiftly followed by abuse of power.
One audience member likened the film to The White Lotus TV series but with the portrayal of social issues taken “one step further”.
Overall the film is visually pleasing, entertaining and thought provoking. (Warning: the prolongated puking scenes are hard to watch).
