TOURIST BRAGS ABOUT ‘CHEAP’ STEAK
In the clip – shared by the TikTok account Authentic Travelling – a US tourist vlogs about visiting The Grillhouse, a five-star restaurant located in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The man orders a 400-gram serving of a rib-eye steak, which according to the till slip, costs just under R300. The dish comes with a side of chakalaka and pap. The man adds a bottle of water and a glass of Merlot to his meal.
In total, the bill comes to R382.
The tourist brags: “That’s a whole steak at a fancy restaurant for just $15. That’s to eat at one of the top-ranked steakhouses in the world”.
He adds: “South Africa is known to have some of the best beef on the planet. And it is so cheap! You can’t order a wedge salad at a steakhouse back in the US for less than $20”.

MZANSI NOT IMPRESSED
While many fellow tourists were no doubt booking their tickets to visit SA, many local Twitter users were offended by the vlog’s commentary.
@Dineo08789541: “All these niceties enjoyed by tourists. Many South Africans cannot afford that ‘best steak’ in the world that our country is famous for”.
@ThisIsMduh: “South African nice things are designed to be enjoyed by dollar foreigners. From food to property”.
@AmuMabasa2: “He doesn’t know the waiters barely get paid a living wage hence why it’s so cheap to eat there. In fact, the food gets way better treatment in terms of how much they pay to source it. But the staff can’t even afford to fully rent a backroom”. – Twitter
