If you put anything on the Internet these days, it lives forever and sometimes gets accidentally revived annually on social media when the same month in which it was originally released comes around again. Two years ago, in January, this hip hop version of ‘Ys Ys Baba’ was posted. This month it’s going viral again as if it’s new.
The song with Afrikaans lyrics – by comedians Stoof & Stoffel – is a parody of American rapper Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” which was an international hit in 1990. Ice – whose real name is Robert van Winkle – had written the song in 1983, based on his life growing up in South Florida.
It was the first hip hop single to top the Billboard charts and has clocked up over 147 million views on YouTube.
