Here are four great South African horror movies to see this October month, and what makes them worth the thrills.

THE SOUL COLLECTOR/8 (2019)

The Soul Collector is a supernatural horror movie, which explores William Ziel and his wife Mary moving to an inherited farm. When the groundskeeper starts acting suspiciously and Mary swears she begins seeing a girl climb out of his bag, the story takes you on a journey of terror – and yes, a few ghosts, too.

Also known as 8, the movie stars Inge Beckmann, Garth Breytenbach, and Tshamano Sebe.

Rest assured, The Soul Collector could well give you sleepless nights even after October has ended.

PINKY PINKY (2020)

Pinky Pinky takes an old South African urban legend, and dresses it up in new clothes for modern horror fans. Based on the story of a ghost that steals naughty children, this movie isn’t something that you should watch on your own – unsettling, and the film takes full advantage of horror techniques like the jump scare!

GOOD MADAM (2021)

Good Madam (Mlungu Wam) is a South African horror story released in 2021, set against the backdrop of apartheid South Africa. The story follows mother and daughter, Tsidi and Winnie, as they make their way to an old mansion – offered up for them to stay in, as long as they don’t bother the mysterious madam in the house.

“Madam” is in a coma, and restricted to one room in the house… Or is she really? Supernatural elements help to take this film to new heights for horror fans.

The sentence “don’t ever go in madam’s room” could even become a horror movie classic.

GAIA (2021)
