We’re delighted to report My Octopus Teacher, the enchanting documentary about a South African man’s ‘friendship’ with an octopus has been officially nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Feature Category!
The nominees for the 23 categories in the 93rd Oscars® were announced Monday morning by actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas and musician Nick Jonas, live from London, via a global live stream.
My Octopus Teacher – by filmmakers Pippa Ehrlich, James Reed and Craig Foster – has mesmerised the world with its magnificent underwater footage and moving story about the relationship between Craig and an octopus that he befriended in a kelp forest, somewhere within the Cape Peninsula waters… during a challenging time in his life.
The beautiful cinematic piece has been hugely popular on Netflix internationally, and was South Africa’s first Netflix Original Documentary.
Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther star who died on August 28, 2020, is the seventh performer to receive a posthumous nomination (for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom). The others were James Dean, Spencer Tracy, Peter Finch (the only posthumous acting winner to date), Ralph Richardson, Massimo Troisi and Heath Ledger.
The Academy Awards are set to air live on Sunday 25 April from Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby® Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood. The Oscars will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
