The old Top Gear team reckon they visited South Africa the most “because the three of us like coming here more than anywhere else in the world”.
During an interview in South Africa, when Jeremy Clarkson was still part of the team, he and teammates James May and Richard Hammond said they can’t even decide which city is better – Durban, Joburg or Cape Town – because they’re all the best with the loudest crowds in the world.
Clarkson reveals that he loves South Africa so much that the foreign city he’s visited the most isn’t Paris or New York, it’s actually Johannesburg.
When asked why they like the locals so much, the three say it’s because South Africans have no hang-ups. “They want to have a good time… they’re not going to spoil it by being cynical or trying to hold back”, they “throw themselves into it wholeheartedly”… which is “the opposite of Britain” which they describe as awful, miserable and still stuck in a rationing mindset.
