After receiving grand public reviews for the sold-out inaugural show last year, the Mayibuye iAfrika Concert returns with a star-studded lineup of music royalty, which includes Ringo Madlingozi, Hotstix Mabuse, Mahotella Queens, Hope Masike, Simphiwe Dana and Siphokazi.

The second edition of the popular music concert will return on 24 and 25 May for an extended show at the Joburg Theatre to commemorate 30 years of South African democracy ahead of the upcoming general elections on 29 May.

‘COMMEMORATING 30 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY IN SONG’

“Mayibuye iAfrika is a musical commemoration of South African freedom songs and their composers with the aim of promoting social cohesion, cross-cultural understanding and rich artistic African heritage and the rebirth of Ubuntu,” says Billy Monama, a renowned guitarist, author, composer and founder of Mayibuye iAfrika.

He says following an increase in audience demand, Mayibuye iAfrika will now offer an extended run of two concert nights, supplemented with a one-day informative workshop featuring lectures by Academics, Researchers, Musicians, and Music Educators.

Monama said Mayibuye iAfrika will be hosted at the iconic Nelson Mandela Auditorium in partnership with the internationally-renowned Joburg Theatre, previously known as Johannesburg’s Civic Theatre.

MAYIBUYE IAFRIKA CONCERT TO BE HELD AT ICONIC NELSON MANDELA STAGE

“I am immensely proud to welcome the triumphant return of the Mayibuye iAfrika Concert to our iconic Nelson Mandela Stage,” said James Ngcobo, the Artistic Director of Joburg City Theatres.

He said this production stood as a beacon of unity, commemorating 30 years of South African democracy through the universal language of music.

“With a legendary lineup and an extended program, this year’s concert promises to be a profound testament to our nation’s journey towards freedom and cultural richness. We look forward to celebrating our heritage, embrace diversity, and honour the indomitable spirit of South Africa,” Ngcobo said.

FITTING TRIBUTE TO 30 YEARS OF FREEDOM – SAYS MONAMA

Monama said given the fact that South Africa was in an election year, probably the most anticipated since the first democratic elections in 1994, it was a fitting tribute to commemorate the country’s struggles to achieve freedom.

“Given all of these coinciding elements, we believe hosting the second Mayibuye iAfrika concert at the Joburg Theatre is a fitting tribute to 30 years of South Africa’s freedom,” said Monama.

Tickets are available at web tickets from R200 to R550 per person; early bird offerings include a 10% discount on Premier Tickets until 31 March 2024.
