Bush Racing

Bush racing has become a popular underground past-time in which retired race horses are literally raced to their death in towns like Mamre and Atlantis.

It’s a brutal sport run by gangs across the Western Cape for gambling purposes. Carte Blanche asks: why has law enforcement failed to put an end to this cruel sport? (Producer: Annalise Lubbe Presenter: John Webb)

Lion Mama

In rural communities, sexual assaults are prevalent and women are desperately vulnerable. So what happens when an Eastern Cape mother defends her daughter against three armed rapists, killing one of the attackers? Self-defence or an unlawful killing? Carte Blanche untangles the issues. (Producer: Tarryn Crossman Presenter: Claire Mawisa)

Mayor vs Minister

For two years Mayor Patricia de Lille has been trying to do what she is lawfully obliged to do – provide the cheapest, cleanest electricity to Cape Town residents. She’s approached two Ministers and Nersa but none will give her permission to buy electricity directly from independent power producers, thereby cutting out Eskom. In desperation the Mayor has now gone to court and the City says it will go all the way to the Constitutional Court if it has to. Could this be a game changer if the City wins its case? (Producer: Joy Summers Presenter: John Webb)
