‘Bergman Island’ is a stunning film for anybody who’s ever loved the legend of the late and great Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. Or even been a fan of his late movie star daughter Ingrid (who graced the Cannes Film Festival poster not that many years ago).
The film takes you on a journey to excellence and simplicity. To the raw rockiness of relationships. What is love. How long can love last? Which love is more empowering, more intoxicating – that of one’s vocation, one’s passion… or another human. Ultimately – what is the line between art and life?
The film, written and directed by Mia Hansen-Love, follows a couple – American filmmakers Chris (played by Vicky Krieps) and Tony (Tim Roth) who take a summer sojourn to Fårö Island to write, just like Bergman did… this being the spot where Bergman lived and filmed many of his most famous films.
‘Bergman Island’ is certain to inspire a new bucket list item for so many movie fans. The film not only explores the mind of a man who created masterpieces… but also the breathtaking landscape in which he found himself.
This is an intelligent film, a true homage to the once great Ingmar Bergman.
