A young cyclist was tragically killed in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, by a vehicle on Sunday morning during a ride with fellow cyclists.
According to Ballito-based IPSS Medical Rescue, eleven cyclists in all were struck by a vehicle which had allegedly been overtaking several cars on a blind rise when it hit the group of cyclists.
The rescue provider said that apart from the one fatality, three of the other cyclists sustained minor to moderate injuries.
IPSS Medical Rescue, together with IPSS Search and Rescue division, responded to reports of the mass casualty incident on the R102 Frasers, Tongaat, on Sunday morning.
IPSS said in a statement on social media that when paramedics arrived “they were greeted by a chaotic scene”. One photo showed broken bicycle parts strewn along the side of the road. IPSS said:
“A young cyclist was unfortunately pinned under the vehicle and dragged for several meters, where he remained trapped under the car. IPSS advanced life support paramedics and rescue crews worked to free the boy. Unfortunately he had sustained multiple injuries and was declared dead on scene.”
According to locals, this stretch of road has unfortunately been the scene of similar accidents before, and is sometimes barely safe for motorists. There are calls for more designated cycling lanes to be created to make the sport safer.
