“I went for a run through Bishopscourt and Constantia Upper this morning, past properties the size of soccer pitches and tennis courts at least the size of 6 shack erfs outlined by the DA at Imizamo Yethu.

“Whites were leaving the leafy green suburbs in shiny cars as POC [persons of colour] filed in on foot for the day’s work.

“When yelling “good morning” as I ran past people, I was met with a “morning ma’am”. Knowing that I was greeted with respect, by a person more than twice my age, because of my skin colour and because of their’s made me sick.

“Knowing that, very soon, I’d be leaving my leafy green suburb in my shiny car didn’t help the feeling either.

“Having to spend the day amongst obscene wealth to earn minimum wage and then go home to almost nothing must take such strength.

“It’s no fucking wonder that when there is anger at the system, protests against service delivery and frustration at how nothing changes, this disempowerment by disparity manifests itself as violence.”
