There were scenes of chaos today in Senekal, South Africa, where two suspects appeared for the first time at the Senekal Magistrates Court in connection with the murder of Paul Roux farm manager, Brendin Horner (22). Shots were fired in the court after crowds surged in, and footage has also been shared showing the angry crowd rocking – and perhaps attempting to overturn – a police vehicle. Watch videos below. Update: A police vehicle was overturned and set on fire.
Brendin’s body was discovered tortured and tied to a pole in the Paul Roux district, Free State, on early Friday morning… causing shockwaves throughout South Africa. The South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested two men, aged 32 and 43, who they claimed were ‘stock thieves’ who Brendin had perhaps caught in the act. Several organisations said the brutal manner in which Brendin was killed, as well as the way in which he was left on a pole in the middle of a field, seemed intended to send a ‘message’ rather than simply a stock theft gone wrong.
Hundreds of farmers and members of both Saai and AfriForum travelled to Senekal today to support Brendin’s family and the community, and to express their dismay at the lack of action from the SA government to halt farm attacks.
Today’s case has been postponed to 16 October 2020.

Earlier crowds had stormed the court building. Shots can be heard being fired. There are conflicting reports in South Africa over whether it was the police or one of the crowd who fired the shots.
