Some surfers in Kommetjie near Cape Town, South Africa, broke the nation’s lockdown regulations to have a morning surf… while others respectfully remained out of the ocean.
Local residents’ opinions were split – some pointing out that by flagrantly disregarding the regulations it could result in them becoming more stringent or lasting longer; whilst others expressed compassion for the surfers and their bravery in risking arrest. Some pointed out that for young people to be out in the ocean is probably safer than them hanging over each other’s walls to chat, and that these surfers don’t usually huddle in groups on the beach afterwards. Several countries around the world have implemented similar beach and surf bans.
