South Africa’s Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, has had a busy and sad day paying his respects to two children, tragically killed in separate incidents in the Western Cape… but both revealing a society that is broken.
Eight-year-old Tazne van Wyk was killed by a neighbour she thought was a friend, earlier this month. Seven-year-old Emaan Solomon was shot dead whilst playing in her yard, caught in the crossfire between rival gangs on Tuesday evening, 25 February.
In both cases, residents have risen to say “enough is enough” and have torched the premises of those they blame for contributing to the horrendous crimes in their area.
Tazne’s funeral took place at the United Reformed Church in Elsies River on Saturday.
