Ouf – watch below for that moment when New Zealand midfielder Sonny Bill Williams caused the All Blacks to lose the second test… and got himself suspended for four weeks… as has been decided by a judicial hearing in Wellington on Sunday night.
The suspension follows Sonny’s shoulder charge on opponent Anthony Watson, Lions’ wing, on Saturday night. French referee Jerome Garces gave him the red card, saying he had to protect the players, making Sonny the first All Black to be shown the red card in 50 years!
Sonny pleaded guilty to unnecessary contact to the head.
In a statement after the hearing, Sonny said: “Obviously really disappointed, but happy with being able to get in there and say my piece…
“They’ve come to the conclusion that it was reckless, it wasn’t intentional. I’ve got in contact with Anthony and I’ve apologised to him, but very disappointed that I was sent from the field last night and let my brothers down.”
The suspension could have been six weeks but was reduced to four based on Sonny’s early admission, good character, remorse and disciplinary record.
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said Sonny was disappointed to have let the team down, but that “we can’t go back and change it. People make mistakes. It’s a fluid game. it’s a fast game, it’s a physical game so we’ve got to move on from it.”
