The brother of murdered farm manager Brendin Horner, says it’s too late to bring his brother back, but he hopes this tragedy – which has rocked the nation – can at least be the catalyst that helps to bring about a better South Africa.
Chaotic scenes were caught on film today in Senekal where two suspects in the Paul Roux farm murder appeared in the magistrates’ court. Hundreds of farmers and concerned citizens gathered to support the family and community who are still reeling from the violent death.
Speaking to Chris van Beljon (from Droogte Hulp charity) in front of the Senekal court today, Brendin’s brother Basjan said (in Afrikaans) that there is no way to describe the heartbreak, and that while nothing will bring his brother back, he hopes his death will ultimately bring about a better South Africa going forwards.

Sanco (South African National Civic Organization) Gauteng Chairperson Chris Malematja also made the journey to Senekal to support the community. He told Netwerk 24: “Enough is enough. We are together on this one.”
According to the Democratic Alliance (DA), a diverse group of DA members attended the gathering at Senekal today, to support Brendin’s family and to “demonstrate outrage at the continuous criminal attacks on our farming community”.
Dr Roy Jankielsohn – Leader of the Official Opposition in the Free State – said: “The DA regards both the owners of farms and their employees as farmers. Brendin Horner, who worked on a farm, paid the ultimate price for his choice of career as a young South African farmer. Crime continues to be one of the most serious security and economic threats to our farming community.”
The scenes today in Senekal included a crowd storming the holding cells, and a police van being overturned and set alight.
Dr Jankielsohn said: “The DA understand the emotions of a violent death of a young person and the frustrations people have with the criminal justice system. The DA will not react to violent outbursts and will continue to be the voice of reason.”
AfriForum also addressed the community of Senekal today, and branded farm attacks and murders as a “form of terror”.
With regard to the violent outbursts today, AfriForum’s Ernst Roets said: “The fury that the people expressed here today is the consequence of the cruelty of a problem that simply persists, coupled with government’s lackadaisical attitude towards farm murders.”
