Rescue workers in Beirut, Lebanon, are frantically searching for at least 100 people who are still missing following a huge explosion which ripped through the port area of the capital city on Tuesday.
The intensity of the blast was so massive that it was heard in Jordan and Cyprus. According to the Red Cross, at least 100 people have been confirmed dead so far, with more than 4,000 injured. Hospitals were inundated with not only injured victims, but patients from other hospitals damaged by the blast.
Lebanon’s President Michel Aoun says the blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse. Apparently this ammonium nitrate – which is used as fertiliser in agriculture, and as an explosive – has been unsafely stored since 2014. He promised that no stone will be left unturned in the investigations, and that those responsible will face the consequences.
The South African Government has not yet issued a statement about the devastating event which has shocked not only Lebanon, but the world.
