The South African national flag will fly at half-mast at every station in the country from 1 – 7 May 2019, according to instructions from President Cyril Ramaphosa, as a mark of respect and in observance of seven days of national mourning for people who lost their lives due to the floods that have ravaged the country in the past week.
As reported by Carte Blanche on Sunday night (watch below), it’s been a terrifying few days for hundreds of people in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) and parts of the Eastern Cape, as heavy rains and flooding that began on Easter Monday have forced them to evacuate their homes.
With at least 70 people dead, about 1000 people displaced, collapsed buildings and road closures, emergency services have been stretched to capacity.
President Ramaphosa visited flood-stricken communities and assured residents that government will assist in rescue and recovery efforts. The President also welcomed the material and social support extended by various sectors of society.
SAPeople members have raised over R98,000 to help families of those affected by the floods. (Please donate here if you can.)
The President also expressed the profound appreciation of the SA government and people of South Africa for the messages of support received from governments around the world.
