Shadow Minister of Finance, David Maynier, kept yesterday’s promise of “I’m going to roast rogue Minister Mosebenzi Zwane tomorrow in Parliament”… but it was DA’s Chief Whip John Steenhuisen who truly ranted, raging at the Speaker of the National Assembly for not making Zwane answer the question.
“You are trampling on the Constitution again,” he accused the Speaker, Baleka Mbete.
Zwane, Minister of Mineral Resources, was asked by Maynier why he wouldn’t resign after his controversial statement on 1 September claiming Cabinet had resolved to establish a judicial commission of enquiry into the decision by certain financial institutions to end their relationships with the Gupta’s Oakbay Investments. Last week the Presidency distanced itself from Zwane’s statement saying it didn’t reflect Cabinet’s view.
Today Maynier asked the minister if he will resign and if not, why not.
Maynier said yesterday that Zwane “deserves to be roasted – for allowing the Guptas to hijack the Executive” to carry out the investigation.
Zwane said Maynier had no right to ask him the question, and that the matter lies with Cabinet, not Parliament… and then Steenhuisen stepped in to deliver his rant which included called the Speaker a “disgrace”.
