The father of Charlottesville victim Heather Heyer, who was killed on Saturday, says he has forgiven the man who allegedly drove deliberately into a crowd of anti-racism protesters, mowing down Heyer’s daughter… and calls on people everywhere to change their hearts and forgive each other.

Mark Heyer said: “People need to stop hating, and they need to forgive each other. I include myself in that in forgiving the guy who did this. He didn’t know better.”

At least a dozen people were also injured in the attack in Virginia, USA which occurred during a counter-protest to a protest about the removal of a statue of Robert E Lee.

President Donald Trump has come under fire for not condemning the white supremacist group that was protesting the removal. On Tuesday he argued that he’s not putting anybody on a “moral plane” and that “you had people that were very fine people on both sides”. He said: “Not all those people were neo-Nazis, not all those people were white supremacists.” He did condemn suspect James Alex Fields Jr, and said the “murderer” is a “disgrace to himself, his family and his country”.

Heyer said he’s proud of his 32-year-old daughter who was protesting against the white supremacists – “I’m proud of her, proud of her for standing up. She had more courage than I have” – and said: “I hope all of this stuff that’s come out isn’t twisted into something negative, but there comes a positive change in people’s hearts, in their thinking, in their understanding of their neighbour.

“We just need to forgive each other… and I hope that’s what comes out of all of this. I hope that her life and what has transpired changes people’s hearts.”
