The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that heavy rain Wednesday 22 February could lead to localised flooding along the coastal areas of KwaZulu-Natal, and it’s predicted that the Tugela River will burst its banks as Spioenkop Dam was expected to reach 100% full overnight.
A warning has been issued for farmers near the Tugela River to remove all pumps from the river.
The dam has been steadily filling up in the last few days. On Monday it was at 77%, as water was flowing heavily into Driel Dam which pushes it into Spioenkop.
Woodstock Dam has already burst its banks and Bergville water purification plant pumps are reportedly also flooded and no longer operational.
On Sunday Hlalanathi Drakensberg Resort shared the two videos below, showing the flowing Tugela River. They said: “This is becoming a regular occurrence… Tugela river is roaring with sounds of relief to the parched earth!”

Heavy rain leading to flooding is also possible in the northern parts of Mpumalanga and southern half of Limpopo Wednesday morning, according to the SA Weather Service.
