ROME – A huge ‘wedge’ tornado and strong storms hit part of Italy, including Rome, on Sunday 7 November 2016 causing at least two fatalities and leaving the Colosseum under water, according to reports in local media.
The tornado was filmed in Cesano, a commune about 27km north of the centre of Rome. (Watch below.) A ‘wedge’ tornado is one that is at least as wide as it is tall. The European Meteo calculated the winds inside the vortex to have exceeded 200km/hour.
The strong storms in Cesano and Ladispoli left at least 60 injured with ambulances battling to reach storm victims because of flooded roads and fallen trees.
Italy has recently been struck by earthquakes, which reportedly left experts concerned with cracks and damage to the 1,936-year-old Colosseum (or Coliseum). Photos uploaded on Sunday night showed the historical amphitheatre had been left under water, after the storm.

On Thursday a water spout (a weak form of a tornado, formed above water) was filmed from the beach at Italian resort, Positano, during violent storms in the area. No damage was reported.
