Convicted South African murderer Henri van Breda will hear his fate at 10h00 on Thursday 7 June 2018, it was announced in court today.
The sentencing of 23-year-old Van Breda – in the triple murder of his parents and brother – was postponed today by Judge Siraj Desai, who said he needed to spend a few more days considering the sentence. He said he owed it to Van Breda and to society in general.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it is expecting a life sentence.
Van Breda was found guilty in May of the murders, and attempted murder of his younger sister Marli at their Stellenbosch home in January 2015.
State Prosecutor Susan Galloway asked the court to take Marli into account when sentencing Henri. She said Marli had not submitted a victim impact statement to protect her privacy, but said Marli “now has to grow up alone knowing that her brother brutally killed her parents and sibling. My Lord, with all due respect, the court must not forget that she has lost her family, she has lost her home, she has lost everything and nothing will ever be the same for her.”
Van Breda has reportedly suffered minor injuries (scratches, bruises and an injured foot) since being in custody at Pollsmoor Prison, after an altercation with another prisoner.
