A 44-year-old male tourist from the Ukraine has been fatally stabbed in Hout Bay whilst walking in Table Mountain National Park, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed on Saturday afternoon.
Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut from SAPS Western Cape said the man was walking in Table Mountain National Park around East Fort at 11h00 this morning when he was “stabbed to death during a robbery”. He died at the scene, which is a well known holiday spot on Cape Town’s famous Chapman’s Peak Drive.
Traut said three suspects fled with the Ukrainian tourist’s backpack containing his personal items.
Thanks to the brave and quick work by members of the local neighbourhood watch, SAPS said that one of the suspects – a 25-year-old man – was apprehended. The suspect was in possession of the stolen items.
“He is due to make a court appearance in Wynberg on Monday,” said Traut. The other two are still on the run.
The circumstances surrounding the murder are being investigated. No details were released yet on how long the man’s planned trip to South Africa was, and whether he was travelling with anybody else.
Community Crime Prevention said: “Please take care when hiking and ALWAYS walk in a large group. Carry self defence spray with you and within reach.”
Local residents said they try to avoid the East Fort buildings area when hiking because there are “druggies” who sleep there. Some also said that safety would be improved if drone patrols were allowed.
