CAPE TOWN – Monday’s Taxi Strike has been suspended after a meeting between the Western Cape Transport MEC and minibus taxi industry representatives.

The strike turned violent on Monday morning when Golden Arrow buses were stoned, and at least one was later set alight in Delft, on the outskirts of Cape Town. One female passenger was injured.

A MyCiTi bus was also torched on the N2. Passengers could be seen fleeing the burning bus after it was set alight. (Watch below.)

Cars were reportedly stoned too. Some trains were cancelled and thousands of passengers were apparently left stranded by the strike.

A number of roads were closed due to the unrest. The strike is believed to be over taxi impoundments, new laws and the taxi council’s forthcoming elections.
