O. R. Tambo International Airport has issued the following statement concerning the horrific incident this afternoon – Monday 15 May 2017:
“As O.R. Tambo International Airport Management, we have this afternoon been made aware of this very unfortunate and deeply concerning matter.
“The incident took place off the R24, along Ring Road, which leads to the airport’s arrivals and departures roadway.
“Law enforcement is currently on site, investigating the crime scene.
“We are awaiting further information from Law enforcement on this matter.
“Should you require any additional information on this, then please do contact the Provincial Spokesperson for Gauteng, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini on 082 411 5311”
No further details were given.
According to local reports, a man was allegedly shot dead just outside the OR Airport drop off area, in what appears to have been an assassination during an attempted hijacking.
Well known social cohesion advocate, Yusuf Abramjee, tweeted these photos and the video below (not for sensitive viewers!), in which a witness said the attackers had AK47 rifles.
Flights are not affected.
