Suspects Arrested in 7-Year-Old’s Murder, Police Deployed to Restore Calm After Homes Torched

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the tragic murder of seven-year-old Emaan Solomons – and a 31-year-old man – in Ocean View, Cape Town in South Africa, earlier this week.

The community, near Kommetjie, was devastated and angered when the young girl was shot whilst playing in her own yard… caught in the crossfire between rival gangs. Her heartbroken father revealed that when he got to her “my girl was laying there… like she just waited for me… and I held her.” She was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) said Thursday evening that two men – aged 19 and 27 – have been arrested. They are due to appear in Simons Town Magistrates’ court on Friday 28 February 2020.

Deployment reinforced in Ocean View following acts of public violence.

SAPS said that members of the Anti-Gang Unit, Public Order Police, National Intervention Unit, police from neighbouring stations as well as the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement officials are patrolling the area of Ocean View following the torching of four houses in the area last night at about 23:00.

It is alleged that a group of unidentified individuals set the houses alight. Cases of arson were opened for investigation.

A stern warning has been issued to all communities to “refrain from taking the law into their own hands as doing so will leave the police with no option but to arrest and charge those responsible”.

Police said the forces will remain on the ground until calm is restored.

There has also been unrest at Bonteheuwel on the Cape Flats where a pregnant woman was shot dead following what police called a “tit for tat” between gangs.
