A 23-year-old man has been arrested by the Hawks in Hartbeesfontein, near Klerksdorp in South Africa, in possession of lion skins, that could have come from the lion-breeding industry, and various drugs.
In a search of a house in Tigane in North West province, the police found three lion skins, mandrax tablets, half and full moon drugs and packets of dagga.
The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation was assisted by members of Klerksdorp Tactical Response Team and Stilfontein Stock Theft unit for contravening the NEMBA Act, which deals with the possession of illegal animal skins and illegal possession of drugs. The team was following up on information they had received.
When asked if the lion skins could have originated from South Africa’s notorious “canned lion hunting” industry Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso told SAPeople that at this point they are not yet certain. “We are still investigating,” she said.
Captain Rikhotso said the court hearing has been postponed until 18 August.
